Abandoned: A poem by Nisha Tandon


Forsaken in love and left broken hearted
She surrendered and left everything to fate
Managing to survive every beguiling promise
To her that he had fraudulently made

She was loathed and she was despised
And lived in circumstances that were unfortunate
Against the wishes of her parents she had gone
And now repented a relation that was illegitimate

A child was born to her out of wedlock
She decided to end her life to relinquish the shame
On an inclement night she left him abandoned
At the doorstep of an undisclosed orphanage

As she walked away tears welled up in her eyes
And her heart almost sank as motherly instincts took shape
Only once more if she looked back she knew
She would hold him close in a tearful embrace

Gathering courage and with firm determination
Her faltering steps she managed to retrace
Lifting her little baby hysterically in her arms
She deliberated to live with pride for his sake

Born to doting parents on a chilly winter noon,  Grew up with four siblings, life was like a boon.   Then came an abrupt end to all my idle fooling,  Born again to lessons, as they started my schooling.  Thought had grown up, now that I was in college,  Born again to lectures, busy acquiring knowledge.  Got a job to my relief, set about to make a career,  Born again despite the whims of bosses every year.                    Married, now that I was grown up, happy to be released,  Born again, at my new home, with many to be pleased.  Then came my li'l Angel, happy the cycle had ended,  Born again as a parent, on us,  she wholly depended.  Finally put in my papers,  wanting to be an idyll,  Inner self, however, wanted my passion to unbridle.      Born again a writer, having found my Muse,  Loving it every bit, a life I got to choose. It looks just like 'ordinary' as the word is... No shiny wraps to cover its face... Simple as it looks, But every page has a hook for taking another look. Be gentle when you flip its page You'll find some imperfect perfect moments at every stage.. Don't skip a few... for it bores you... You might miss  my  accomplishments, tucked away neatly in a line or two...   They say, ' Life  is not a bed of roses'  You'll see... Some lines are full of agony and bruises... Turn the corners delicately... For some fragile smiles may try to slip through, impatiently... Every line that you have read... ..Is the truth I have always dread...
