Song of a caged bird: A poem by Madhumita Bhattacharjee Nayyar

SONG OF A CAGED BIRD

She ventures into unknown territory,
Wanting to reach all with her story,
She flaps her wings
And sweetly sings,
Singing in an expressive croon,
Waiting each day for that only boon
Of a free flight
Across the skies, every day and night.

Her song moves with the rhythm of the breeze,
Ripples with the waves of the seas,
Goes up and down the hills,
At times sitting atop the pensive tree.

The longing for a nest,
A loving place to rest,
Surrounded by her own,
Not in the caged comforts alone.

She sings on till her voice chokes,
In her tears, her feathers soak,
She does not let her lilt jitter
By the weight of the bonded fetters.

She wants to be one with all,
Singing together in a melodious call,
Breaking the cage, the dividing wall
And sing new songs, not sounding banal.

 She yearns for freedom
And happy, colorful seasons,
Freedom in her song rings,
That is why, I know, the caged bird sings.

Yes, she sings to chart her own flight,
With all adversities fight,
Create her own story,
In brilliant and radiant glory.

She ventures into unknown territory,
Wanting to reach all with her story,
She flaps her wings
And sweetly sings,
Singing in an expressive croon,
Waiting each day for that only boon
Of a free flight
Across the skies, every day and night.
